On May 14, sixty eager DMBA volunteers assembled at the north end of Durham Forest to carve out a new single track that is 0.8km in length. This is by far the largest volunteer turnout to date. Way to go DMBA! This new trail, which is yet to be named, was built to replace two eroding fall line trails that were destroyed by the winter harvest.
The DMBA crew met at 9:00am and after a brief safety talk and introduction of crew leaders, we set to work on what appeared to be a daunting task. But the saying, “Many hands make light work,” could never have been truer. In three and a half hours the trail was 95% completed. The crew then took a well-deserved break to enjoy a BBQ lunch prepared by our own king and queen of the grill – Tom and Ene. After lunch, a few members remained to complete the finishing touches on the trail.
The trail can easily be found by following the directional arrows from the open grassy area just inside the gate at the main parking lot. The arrows will lead you through the trail and along a preferred route through the northern area of the forest and then back to the parking lot.
The DMBA will be proposing another new trail to the LSRCA for a build this fall. If you haven’t had an opportunity to come out to build, give it a try. It is indeed a very satisfying feeling to ride a trail which you have helped to create and a legacy for many years to come.
