On Saturday October 16, 28 volunteers from the DMBA gathered to build a sweet piece of single track in the Durham Forest Main Tract. The trail was built so that a badly eroding trail that passed through a ravine could be closed. A nearby badly eroding fall line branch was also closed. It is estimated that the new trail segment opened is about 50-60 metres longer than the total amount closed.
The new trail segment, which is yet to be named, was built to sustainable standards and will provide many years of enjoyment to the mountain bike community as well as other users. The new segment begins by having to go up and over a rock pile. It then meanders along the west side of the ravine before going around a bermed corner and passing over about an 8 foot cobble stone bridge. The trail then proceeds north along the east side of the ravine and exits where the original trail exited onto the double track. The theme for this trail was “rocks.” This will provide a different riding experience from any other trail on the property.
Thanks go out to the volunteers, who all seemed to really enjoy themselves. Without these hardworking individuals, this trail would not have been possible. The trail was built in a record 2.5 hours. Thanks also go to LSRCA and in particular Bill Thompson and Paul Cottenden, who supported us not only by sanctioning the trail but also by cutting hazardous trees and helping to dig the tread alongside the DMBA members. The DMBA is proud of the great working relationship that we have developed with LSRCA. This relationship will enable the two organizations to continue to improve the trail system that we value so greatly.
Special thanks go to our generous sponsors, who provided the funds to pay for our trail crew t-shirts. Those sponsors were KHS Canada, LSRCA, Evolution Cycle, Chico Racing, Bike NXS and Kent Edmunds of SPMI.
