The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville has for a few seasons delivered a Sprockids program, but the kids were then on their own to get out riding. Well again this year the DMBA is offering those lucky “graduates” a chance to keep riding.  Kids attending this program will also become DMBA youth members and be invited to our regular youth/beginner rides on Wednesday evening at Durham Forest.  These rides will focus on a mix of riding, and trail side instruction.  When an opportunity presents itself to practice a skill (e.g. a log-over) the riders will get some tips on how to clear it, and a chance to practice.

For those unfamiliar with Sprockids, as the web site says: “Through the sport of mountain biking students develop a strong sense of self-esteem, while discovering the potential within themselves.”

The Sprockids program teaches people:

  • how to mountain bike – 55 skills over 4 program levels,
  • how to maintain your bike,
  • environmental stewardship,and
  • trail safety and trail building.

Sprockids is based on the following principles:

  • A fun way to develop a taste for cycling through cycling games and activities that are facilitated by a competent rider.
  • The needs of young people to seek strong sensations and to discover new ways to play, while developing personality.
  • Recognition of achievements of individual skills and group participation through the Sprockids Passport of Accomplishment.

Know any kids who’d like to have some fun, and learn to mountain bike at the same time? Then get them enrolled straight away.  There are only a few spots left.  Here are the details:
