The DMBA is not a race team, but after the number of members that turned up at the Duke’s Summer Epic 8 at Hardwood, and some of their results maybe we should reconsider. Our four man team (Terry, Tom, Brian, and Mike) claimed first in their category after fighting their way up from almost last place. Lindsay did a her race solo and finished 2nd in her category just a few minutes out of first. Our 6 person open team came in 9th, Jon and his 200+ division team placed 2nd, and we had a few more teams and solo riders as well. But best of all everyone had a great time despite the lousy weather.

Here’s a report from Terry Sinclair.

On July 26, close to 20 members took part in the 8 hour race at Hardwood Hills. The day looked to be doomed to very wet weather. Lightening flashed and thunder crashed, as competitors scrambled to erect the tent village in the pouring rain. By the time the race began at 10:00 AM the rain had slowed considerably, but dark clouds and thunder continued to threaten the hard competitors as they sped along over slick single track. Despite the threats, the weather did start to break and by early afternoon the conditions of the single track were nearly perfect.

For those of you who have never competed in an 8 hour race, you are really missing a fantastic day of athletic competition. These races are called Citizens Events. This means that the race course is designed to allow beginning riders to elite to have a great day of riding. The main objective is fun and although many teams are working their hardest for a spot on the podium, riders seem to never lose touch with the true purpose of the day - camaraderie and enjoyment.

On Saturday September 27 the last 8 hour even for the season will take place at Hardwood Hill. The DMBA will, once again, have a strong presence at this event. Start planning now and put together a team of friends that you would enjoy spending the day with. There are many categories, from solo to 5-6 person relay teams. For more information click here.
